History

It is said that in remote antiquity, Emperor Shun arrived in Shaoshi Mount during his southern inspection. Seeing red cliffs and sleeps and wonderful sceneries, he played elegant and beautiful “Shao Music” delightfully, since then the mount was named “Shaoshi Mount”. In Kai Huang 9th year of Sui dynasty (AD.589), Dong Zhou was changed into “ShaoZhou”, that is, to take “Shao” of “Shaoshi Mount” as the name of Zhou. In October of 1938, the provincial capital of Guangdong was moved to ShaoZhou, and it was named as “ShaoGuan” formally in 1943.

Shaoguan has over 2100 years’ of history, and county administration has been established in Shaoguan downtown at present since the early stage of Xihan dynasty · Shao Zhou in the history (Shixing county) was famed as “a Famous County of South of the Five Ridges”, which has pretty important position in the R&D history of south of the five ridges and has become an agricultural and forest production base and important military town in the area of Nanling mountains at early state. It was a national center of mining industry during the Tang and Song dynasties, and important national tax outpost during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Lying in the valley of Zhen River, Wu River and the Northern River, surrounded by Huanggang Mount, Lianhua Mount and Furong Mount, Shaoguan is a place with green hills, clear waters and attractive sceneries. In recent years, it has been awarded with titles of “Excellent Traveling City in China”, “Advanced City of National Sanitation Cities”, “Civilization City of Guangdong Province”, etc.
