Nanhua Buddhist Temple lies on the side of Caoxi, six kilometers away from Maba Town, Qujiang County. The temple was first built in A.D.502, more than 1,500 years ago. Huineng(A.D.638-713), the sixth ancestor of Buddhist gave speeches here for 37 years and brought out The Sixth Ancestor Giving Speech, the only classics of China¡¯s Buddhism. The temple with a construction area of 12,000 square meters was repaired throughout the years. There are many valuable cultural relics here, including the real body of Huineng and more than 300 national first class historical relics such as gold-silked cassock with one thousand Buddha and decree by Wu Zetian, wood-carved arhat in Beisong Dynasty, copper clock of thousand Jins , pan of thousand people in Yuan Dynasty, steel tower of thousand Buddha in Qing Dynastry and Dazang Sutra written with gold, The temple is surrounded by ancient trees, several of which, being at the height of over 40 meters, are rare ones in world. Nanhua Buddhist Temple was classified as the national key monastery in 1983 and the national major historical and cultural sites under state protection in 2001.
